ID Tips. Mosquitoes are small, thin, biting flies which are often abundant in many urban areas. The key identifying characteristic is the long, thin mouthparts (proboscis) designed for piercing skin and sucking blood.

Basic Biology. Mosquitoes are the most important group of flies in terms of human health. The females of most species require a blood meal in order to produce eggs, and bites on humans leave a characteristic welt which itches. Most importantly, mosquitoes can carry and transmit disease organisms to humans and animals, such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and encephalitis.
Adult female mosquitoes lay their eggs soon after extracting a blood meal from some animal. These eggs will be deposited in slow-moving or standing bodies of water. The eggs hatch into small, thin larvae that live their entire lives in water. The larvae have a distinct head capsule and most species have a tube-like projection at the tail end which is extended above the water's surface to allow the larvae to breathe. The larvae forms a pupa after feeding for a period of time on algae and other aquatic organic debris. After emerging, the adult mosquitoes usually travel only a short distance from where they emerge, although a few species can travel many miles from their breeding sites.

Key Inspection Tips. In most situations involving structures, adult mosquitoes are entering the inside of the building in considerable numbers or are hovering around buildings. Usually, adult mosquitoes will be breeding in nearby sources of standing water. Mosquitoes will breed in a myriad of different sites around structures. The most common locations include ponds, lakes, drainage ditches, drainage ponds, culverts, and manholes with standing water. Other, usually overlooked locations, include old tires, bird baths, and tree holes. Any bucket, can, or other container filled with water and left standing for a week or more could serve as a breeding site for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes may also breed in standing water in a crawlspace, basement, or sump pumps in these areas.
Inspect likely larval breeding sites by quietly observing the water to look for larvae moving about. If the container is disturbed, the larvae may freeze their movements making them more difficult to see. In larger bodies of water, such as a pond or drainage ditch, a long-handled scoop should be used to dip into the water along the edges to check for the presence of larvae.
Adult mosquitoes will be attracted to a building for various reasons. Mosquitoes are rarely attracted by light waves, such as those emitted by “bug zappers.” The presence of people or animals is usually the biggest attractant. During the day, mosquitoes will rest in vegetation— typically in more shaded areas—around or near the building. Inspect the vegetation by lightly shaking it and look for mosquitoes taking to flight. Walls inside and out should also be inspected for resting mosquitoes. Mosquitoes will usually rest in darkened areas.
